Description
Local flavours, an underground tunnel and a walk across a volcanic landscape: this Etna sunset tour from Catania packs all three into one afternoon, ending with the light fading over the mountain. Naturalist guides lead the group, which is limited to 8 people.
The first stop is a local farm, where you taste honey, olive oil and other products made on the fertile land around the volcano. Next comes a lava cave formed by an eruption of past centuries. Helmets and headlamps are provided, and the guide explains how the volcano's force carves out these hollows under the surface.
Then the route climbs the southern slope to Rifugio Sapienza, at 1,910 metres. Trails wind between recent lava flows and extinct craters and the guide fills in how the area formed and its history. The volcano is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
