Description
A Mount Etna summit hiking tour with a certified volcanological guide takes you across lava flows, volcanic sand and lava tunnels, with the Valle del Bove opening below. Every walk starts at Rifugio Sapienza on the south side, at about 1,900 m, and you decide how high to go.
The lighter option rides the cable car to roughly 2,500 m and continues on foot over lava from recent eruptions to the Barbagallo Craters, around 3,000 m. From there you look at the summit area and follow volcanic activity from a safe distance, then descend through the ash slopes, stopping at a lookout above the Valle del Bove. It suits anyone after a moderate trek.
The demanding option adds off-road 4x4 vehicles from the cable car up to 2,850 m. About two hours of walking over fresh lava and sand lead to roughly 3,400 m, depending on weather and volcanic activity, and then onward between the two craters La Voragine and Bocca Nuova, heading for the Southeast Crater, with the Ionian coast in view.
- Barbagallo Craters on the 3,000 m route
- Valle del Bove viewpoint on both routes
- Guide, helmet and insurance included, with hotel pickup if you select it
If the higher points are closed, the guide leads an alternative route through lava valleys. The tour is not suitable for pregnant women, children under 6 or people with heart or breathing problems.
