Description
The Catania night walking tour is a two-hour stroll through the old town after dark, with a licensed guide, when the heat has eased and the monuments are lit up. It begins in Piazza Duomo, facing the Cathedral and the Elephant Fountain, which stands for the whole city.
From there you walk up Via Crociferi, the street where Catania's Baroque is at its richest. Its four old churches are admired from the street, together with the graceful arches that draw so many cameras. The route then crosses the Pescheria district, where the market is shut but the lanes have a quiet, atmospheric feel, and returns to Piazza Duomo through Porta Uzeda.
- Piazza Duomo and the Elephant Fountain
- Via Crociferi, with its four churches
- Piazza Teatro Massimo, a stop along Via Etnea
- The monument to Bellini and the Roman amphitheater in Piazza Stesicoro
The walk ends at Piazza Stesicoro, where the amphitheater ruins are known as the Black Colosseum for the dark lava stone they are built of. Everything is seen from the outside, so no admission tickets are needed. The route is not suitable for wheelchair users.
