Description
A Mount Etna tour with hotel pickup spares you the driving and fills a long day with the volcano's different faces. The driver collects you at your accommodation in Catania or the surrounding area and heads uphill, and on the way you pause to look at a house engulfed by lava and at an old quarry of lava stone.
At Rifugio Sapienza, 2,000 metres up, you visit the ancient Silvestri Craters, then hike on to the craters opened by the 2001 eruption. Another stop takes you into a lava flow cave, shaped as the lava hardened over the centuries.
The day ends in Zafferana Etnea with a street food tasting of Sicilian specialities before the ride back to Catania. Total time is about seven hours, including some free time at the refuge's bar.
