Description
The guide on this Etna morning excursion from Catania starts telling the story of Europe's highest volcano on the car ride up. The walk that follows is soft trekking at an easy level, fine for children and adults alike.
At around 2,000 metres you step onto the lateral craters and cross old lava flows, with colours that change from one slope to the next and the scent of the park's vegetation in the air. The route also goes into volcanic caves, tunnels where the lava once ran; helmet and flashlight are included.
- Lateral craters and lunar-looking landscapes
- Valle del Bove, where lava flows down during eruptions
- The 1991 lava stream that came close to a village
- A volcanic cave with helmet and flashlight
Afterwards a local company serves small tastings of honey, olive oil and wine, and the guide drives you back to Catania. The pickup and drop-off are in an air-conditioned car, and the whole outing lasts about six hours. The highest point reached is 2,100 metres and the summit is not visited. If the weather turns, the guide can change the route for safety.
Lunch and extra food and drinks are not included. The tour is not recommended for people with mobility impairments, heart problems or altitude sickness. It is run in English, Italian and Spanish.
