Description
The elephant statue in Piazza Duomo, the symbol of the city, is where this Catania walking tour begins, with a licensed local guide. From there the walk takes about two hours through the centre, mixing history and legends with tales of everyday Sicilian life, and closes with advice for making the most of your days in the city.
You peek inside the Cathedral, where the city's archbishops have their seat, then wander into the busy fish market, with restaurants close by and a district full of nightlife. The route continues to Ursino Castle, the one medieval monument left standing after the earthquake of 1693 that ruined Catania.
- Piazza Duomo and the elephant statue
- Catania Cathedral

- Via Crociferi, a street of monasteries, churches and palaces
The walk finishes in Piazza Università, a handsome square only a short stroll from Piazza Duomo. Because the tour stays outside the attractions, nothing has to be paid at the doors, and the guide explains each monument, which helps you choose what to go back and visit by yourself.
The tour is given in English. A minimum of four people is needed, and the tour may be cancelled the day before if the group is smaller. It runs rain or shine, though particularly bad weather might lead to a cancellation. Food, drinks and hotel pickup are not included.
