Description
The Etna summit trek with drone video starts at Rifugio Sapienza, on the south side, where you meet your licensed volcanologist guide. After a briefing on the route and safety, the cable car takes you to 2,500 metres, with views of lava flows and the Sicilian coast already opening up.
Off-road vehicles then climb across the volcanic landscape to 2,850 metres, passing extinct craters and recent lava flows. From here you walk over black sand and lava slag to about 3,300 metres, close to the summit craters, while the guide explains the geology of Etna and its major eruptions. The view in smoke and strong colours extends in all directions, from the mountains inland to the sea.
The way down is different from the way up and passes the Barbagallo craters. Then you head toward the cable car station and go back down to Rifugio Sapienza, where the trek ends.
