Description
This Etna trekking tour from Catania takes you up into a world of smoking craters and black lava, with transport from Catania and the surrounding area in both directions. From Rifugio Sapienza the cable car lifts you to 2,500 metres, and the walking begins on lava ground.
Your volcanologist guide leads you into a lava channel, a tunnel shaped by ancient flows, its glossy black walls recording thousands of years of geology. The trail then climbs to about 3,000 metres, through smoke, gas and hot rock, to the active craters. The Bove Valley opens below and the bare rock looks lunar when the sun hits it.
A drone follows the day, and each guest gets a personalised video to keep.

The walking part takes about four to five hours at medium difficulty, so it suits people who like wild places and some effort.
