Description

This Mount Etna summit craters trek starts from Piano Provenzana, climbs by 4WD and then on foot to the edge of the Central Crater at 3,300 metres, with fumaroles and sulphur-coloured rock.

The Mount Etna summit craters trek is the climb many hiking fans on the volcano dream of, and it begins on the northern side. The group meets at Piano Provenzana, at about 1,800 metres, and off-road 4WD vehicles carry you through changing vegetation along a volcanic track up to a lookout point at 2,800 metres, the Observatory.

From there a 5 km uphill walk begins across a lunar landscape of massive volcanic bombs and slag. The climb gains about 500 metres and takes roughly an hour and a half, and it finishes on the rim of the Summit Central Crater, 3,300 metres up, where fumaroles release gas and sulphur minerals show bright colours. The weather decides how close you can get.

The way down follows a sandy channel and takes about another hour and a half, with the guide beside you and pointing out volcanic features. At the Pizzi Deneri Observatory the 4WD vehicles take you back to Piano Provenzana. The whole excursion lasts about five hours.

  • A certified guide, mountain and volcano specialist

The 4WD ticket is paid on the day at the meeting point and food and drinks are not included. If the tour is cancelled because of weather, you get a full refund. It is not recommended for pregnant women, people with heart or breathing problems, or wheelchair users.
