Description
This Etna winery visit starts in a cellar dug fully below ground, planned along bioarchitecture lines so that it vanishes into the hillside instead of dominating it. Inside, an exposed cross-section of volcanic soil shows six metres of geological history, with the roots of the vines running down into layers of cooled lava.
The family behind the estate has worked these slopes since the 1970s and was the earliest on Etna to be certified organic. Its vineyards in the Contrade of Blandano in Viagrande and Praino in Milo grow only native grapes: two red Nerello varieties (Mascalese and Cappuccio), Carricante and Catarratto.
After the cellar you move to a terrace with views from the smoking summit down to the Ionian Sea, for a guided tasting of three organic Etna DOC wines of the deAetna line: a white, a rosé and a red. Traditional bread with the estate's extra virgin olive oil comes alongside.
