Your journey begins with an exhilarating 8km 4x4 ride, climbing from 1800 meters to 2800 meters. As you ascend, your guide will share fascinating insights into Etna's volcanic history and geology. Upon reaching the high-altitude Volcanological Observatory, you'll embark on your first trek.
This initial hike takes you to a breathtaking panoramic viewpoint at approximately 2900 meters. Gaze down upon the summit craters, recent lava flows, and the stunning panorama of Sicily stretching out below (weather permitting, of course!).
Next, your 4x4 will transport you to the edge of a massive northern crater. Here, the most exciting part of your adventure begins – a longer trek on foot, leading you back towards your starting point.
Prepare to be amazed! You'll traverse the impressive North Rift, explore the craters from the 1947 eruption, don protective helmets to delve into the perfectly preserved chimney of a volcanic cone, and peer into the very mouths that once spewed forth molten lava.
Your journey continues along the rims of explosive craters, descending through slopes of volcanic ash. You'll walk amongst craters formed by countless lateral eruptions – from those of 1809, 1874, 1879, 1911, 1914, 1923, 1974/75, all the way to more recent eruptions such as that of 2002.
