Description

A Mount Etna trekking tour off the beaten path with a naturalistic guide: Silvestri Craters, the 2001 lava flow, Valle del Bove, a lava cave and a sandy descent.

This Mount Etna trekking tour off the beaten path starts in Catania's historic center with a naturalistic guide. A short stop in Trecastagni lets you pick up water and a sandwich for lunch and have a coffee, then the trek begins at 1,850 m, away from the usual tourist paths.

You reach the Silvestri Craters and the 2001 lava flow, climbing gradually to 2,400 m with views of lunar-like terrain. The route then follows the edge of the Valle del Bove, a vast amphitheater of black lava formed by a collapse thousands of years ago. Lunch is at 2,400 m, facing the valley, the active southeastern crater and the Ionian coast.

After lunch comes the descent on soft, steep volcanic sand, followed by a lava flow cave, which is closed during strong tremors or eruptions. The day ends with a break at a local bar and the return to Catania's center. The total climb is about 550 m.

  • Pickup and drop-off in Catania center and Trecastagni
  • Trekking sticks and shoes, a warm jacket and a rain jacket

The experience needs at least two participants, so solo travelers should contact the organizer before booking. Food, drinks and hotel pickup are not included. It is not suitable for children under 10, pregnant women, people with a low level of fitness, or anyone with heart, breathing or altitude problems.
