Description
The Diocesan Museum of Catania is the Cathedral's museum, in the Palazzo del Seminario dei Chierici next to the Duomo: it keeps the treasure of Saint Agatha, the silverware of the diocese's churches and a terrace with a view over the square and Mount Etna.
On the ground floor is the silver fercolo of Saint Agatha, the "vara" that carries the saint in procession through the city. On the upper floors are the Cathedral treasury, the bishops' vestments, the relics of the patron saint and a picture gallery from the 14th to the 20th century.
At the top, the terrace looks out over Piazza del Duomo, Via Etnea and the volcano. From the museum you can also go down to the underground Terme Achilliane and climb up to the terraces of Porta Uzeda. In the Seminary's chapel there is also the chair used by John Paul II on his 1994 visit.
