Description
The Church of San Francesco Borgia is the Jesuits' church on Via dei Crociferi, Catania's Baroque street: a restrained façade with two orders of paired marble columns, at the top of a double flight of steps, next to the large Jesuit College.
Inside are three wide, bright naves. The high altar is made of Sicilian hardstones, agates and jaspers, with columns of green agate; the dome was frescoed around 1760 by Olivio Sozzi with Vito D'Anna, with Christ in the center and the four continents evangelized by the Jesuits.
Take a close look at the cherry-wood pulpit, with a draped curtain that looks like real fabric. The painting on the high altar, a Madonna from 1567, is a copy of the Madonna of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, given to Francis Borgia himself.
