Mount Etna and Alcantara Gorges: Tour through Volcanic Landscapes and River Gorges

Full-day hike through volcanic landscapes, lava caves, and river gorges carved by ancient lava flows

After meeting our guide at your accommodation, harbor, station, or airport, passing through some villages around Mount Etna, you will see areas planted with vineyards and orchards, and as you climb higher, you will learn a lot about the local people, their culture, and their attachment to this fertile land. Along the way, our guide will explain the history of the birth of the largest active volcano in Europe. During an easy trekking excursion of about an hour and a half along the edge of extinct craters, you will enjoy a spectacular view. You will admire the unique landscape of the different lava flows and the contrast with the vegetation of the various birch, oak, and pine forests. We will proceed on foot into the innermost parts of the extinct craters, where you will see all types of lava, minerals, pyroclastic material, and pioneer plants. Our environmental hiking guide will accompany you during this visit, and you will learn a lot about the volcano's history, its myths, and its current situation. We will explore a typical lava flow cave formed during an eruption, equipped like cavers with helmets and flashlights. These caves were created by the various lava flows and still have special properties. At lunchtime, we will stop at a mountain lodge for a genuine and typical Sicilian lunch (starter, first course, water and wine, not included in the price). Please let us know in advance if you have food allergies, follow special diets, or are vegan or vegetarian. Finally, after lunch, we will visit the beautiful Alcantara Canyons, formed thousands of years ago by several lava flows that invaded the bed of the Alcantara River. Here we will walk barefoot in the cool water for a short walk in the river. At the end of the tour, you will be taken back to your accommodation or meeting point.
