Description
The Teatro Giovanni Verga is the main venue of the Teatro Stabile di Catania, on Via Giuseppe Fava in the Cibali neighborhood. It is not a monument but a fully active theater, with a repertoire that favors Sicilian authors: Verga, Pirandello, Martoglio, Brancati.
The auditorium, with orchestra and balcony, has 609 seats. It opened in 1969 as the Teatro delle Muse, converted from an old movie theater, because the company had outgrown its venues: subscribers had gone from 75 to about 13,000.
In January 1981 a fire destroyed the theater. It was rebuilt in less than a year and reopened under the name of the Catania-born writer Giovanni Verga.
The Stabile was founded in 1958 in a small hall converted from a garage, on the initiative of a group of friends including the actors Turi Ferro and Michele Abruzzo, and it was the first resident theater company south of Rome.
