Description
The Quattro Canti (Four Corners) are formed by the intersection of Via Etnea with Via di Sangiuliano.
The four palaces, built in the same architectural style, have chamfered corners, creating an octagonal plaza.
The four palaces are buildings belonging to noble Catanese families: the Marquises Paternò Castello of Sangiuliano (south-east), the Dukes Paternò Castello of Carcaci (north-east), the Massa family of San Demetrio (north-west), and the convent of Santa Nicolella (south-west).
It was from a balcony of this building in the summer of 1862 that Garibaldi, after having occupied Sicily during the campaign for Italian unification, uttered the famous phrase "Roma or Death!"
From 1915 to 1934 the area was crossed by the tracks of the Catania-Acireale tramway.
