Description
The Pescheria (Piscarìa in Sicilian) is the ancient fish market of the city of Catania and is included in the tourist itinerary for the folklore it exudes as you walk among the fishmonger's stalls.
Only by experiencing it firsthand can you realize how picturesque this market can be, comparable only to its twin, the Vucciria market in Palermo: the market is always bustling with crowds and the incessant clamor (the vuciata) of the vendors creates an Arabic souk-like background, with the typical atmosphere of a casbah.
The stalls have been located since the early 19th century in the tunnel dug in the 16th century under the Palazzo del Seminario dei Chierici and the walls of Charles V, opposite the Archi della Marina, once submerged in the waters of the underlying fishing harbor, now filled in and transformed into a public green space, in Piazza Alonzo di Benedetto and Piazza Pardo.
