Description
The Church of San Giuliano is one of the four great Baroque churches on Via dei Crociferi, in Catania, facing the Jesuit College: a convex façade with simple lines, closed off by a wrought-iron railing, and a dome you can visit.
Inside, the plan is an elongated octagon with apsed arms, beneath a dome decorated with stucco and gold-leaf moldings. Look out for the high altar in colored marble and gilded bronze, the 18th-century floor with polychrome inlays and the alabaster Crucifix in one of the chapels.
It was the church of a convent of Benedictine nuns, nearly all from noble families. From the loggia that wraps around the dome, the second tallest in the city, the nuns watched the procession of Saint Agatha which, on the night of February 5, climbed Via San Giuliano before turning into Via dei Crociferi.
