Description
This Etna wine tour from Catania is a day of about seven hours that mixes sea views, volcanic vineyards and the flavours of eastern Sicily. It runs as a bus excursion with a dedicated guide for the whole tour.
The bus leaves the centre of Catania from a meeting point in the city, such as Piazza Stesicoro, and follows the coast of the Cyclops Riviera. Fishing villages come first, Aci Castello and then Aci Trezza, and only after them does the bus turn inland towards the south-eastern slopes of Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe. Along the way the guide explains the history, the landscape and the food and wine of the area, in Italian or in English.
The tour then stops at two producers on the volcano. At the first, a winery or an olive oil producer, you have a guided visit and a tasting of two Etna DOC wines with a plate of local products. At the second winery you walk through the vineyard and the cellar, learn what makes the terroir of Etna so particular, and taste more wines with traditional Sicilian dishes.
